Coaching Basketball Skills: Basketball Coach book by Coach Peterman
Lon Kruger: "The X's and O's success in" Book Review
I love the Christmas holiday right time now because it allows me time to think, reflect and re-direct energy my basketball on new items such as books and DVDs. I had the chance to read a book by Lon Kruger and DJ Allen called "The X's and O of success."
I actually knew some of the assistant coaches Coach Kruger of my days at Blinn College and had met briefly while I was out on the road recruiting. He did not remember the meeting, but I remember he came out of his way for a young assistant coach and not "Big Time "me at all unlike many Division 1 coaches.
Coach Kruger has found a unique formula for success and tries to highlight the best for his players and basketball teams. He does things with dignity and class that is not always associated with the sport. He speaks of his principles of management of crops to seek stability and direction and change in positive, productive environments. I felt that his book could be applied to business and coaching.
Coach Kruger is an "art" when it comes to rebuilding programs of college basketball. He does a great job of weaving his own experiences of coaching basketball in examples that demonstrate leadership and ability to improve performance. It talks about training at Texas-Pan American coach men's basketball Head / Athletic Director at the age of 29 years and eight elite appearance in his second year at Kansas State, a Final Four appearance and the team record of 29 victories at the University Florida, a great title for Ten Illinois and Sweet 16 appearance for the Rebels Running "from UNLV. He also mentioned his two jobs and a half year coach with the Atlanta Hawks of the NBA and how they were fired mid-season. He did not pull any punches in this book.
The chapters of the book covers 39 life lessons and how to apply leadership in a field of activity or coaching. Each chapter is broken into three parts: Pre-game, Game-time and Post-Game. It is very easy to read book that has life lessons that everyone can take something. In the lesson of thirty years, here's a quote I like: "Remember, great leaders develop other great leaders." It is simple, honest and true.
Here is an excerpt from the book:
"Lesson One: the simplicity of success
Pre-Game:
It's simple. The Success is a process not an event.
This is not always the most exciting thing to hear. We want to believe in quick fixes, silver bullets, catching magic in a bottle.
But if you take time to analyze the vast majority of successful people, organizations, companies or teams, you will find that their success is a byproduct of doing things right on a daily basis.
This is the reality that we face as leaders - the simplicity of success. So how do we address something that is so basic? How can we say this message with our teams every day?
Welcome to the challenge of being a leader.
Game Time:
The average fan of basketball college would probably be surprised to learn how our coaching staff is focused on working with players to develop outside ground, in addition to helping to improve the court.
When these young men join our program, they are usually 18 -, 19 - or 20 years. Many of them are away from home for the first time.
Some arrive on the scene with a strong work ethic while some have not the idea of working hard. It is relative to their origins and its environs. While you can learn something about the players during the recruitment process, there's just some things you can not know the people before being around them every day.
Our goal as a staff is to develop our program of long-term success.
This means having children of our team who are emotionally, mentally and physically able to perform at their highest level in basketball and in the classroom and socially. We want to maximize the potential of every player in our program.
To do this we must start with the basics. We talk to our children on the simplicity of success. "Be careful of what you have to take care of today "We tell them." If you do this every day for your full term with us, you will have success and we will be successful as a team. "
It is the teaching of basic principles, but that's what works. "
title = "Read the entire lesson ..."> Read the entire lesson. . .
What others say about Coach Kruger and the book:

Roy Williams

"Coach just lets you be the best you can be - on and off the court. The players give their best because they know he cares. "
Mitch Richmond
The former All-American for Kruger at Kansas State and six-time All-Star
"Lon Kruger is an outstanding leader and a great teacher. He brings everything to the table, all you need to build a program. I encourage you to take lessons from this book to heart. Lon knows whereof he speaks. "

"Lon Kruger is one of the best leaders of young men I've ever seen in nearly a quarter century of college basketball covering for CBS. In addition, it is a good man. It does not surprise me that he was a proven winner time and time again. When you combine leadership with passion and integrity, you get Lon Kruger. "
Jim Nantz
CBS Sports
"Very few coaches have been able to change cultures as quickly and successfully as Lon Kruger. He knows how to shape a group of people into one team with one common goal and has proven time and time again. Lon high standards for all those around him and he has a passion for winning, but not at any cost. It is probably his best trait. "
Larry Brown
Head Coach, Charlotte Bobcats
Only coach to win both an NCAA National Championship (Kansas 1988) and an NBA Championship (Detroit 2004)
"Lon Kruger has the business because he understands people. The business world missed an all-star when Lon went into coaching. "
Bill Boyd
Executive Chairman of the board, Boyd Gaming Corporation
I personally loved the book and reflect back on it a lot in the years to come. It gives you something to think about and if you can take one or two things in the book then it would be interesting as a basketball coach. I would give it a 5 out of 5 stars. The Great Debaters List Price: $14.95 Sale Price: $2.68 Average Rating: ![]() |
|
Inspired by real events, the fascinating The Great Debaters reveals one of the seeds of the Civil Rights Movement in its story of Melvin B. Tolson (Denzel Washington in a captivating performance) and his champion 1935 debate club from the all-African-American Wiley College in Texas. Tolson, a Wiley professor, labor organizer, modernist poet, and much else, runs a rigorous debate program at the school, selecting four students as his team in '35, among them the future founder of the Congress of Racial Equality, James Farmer Jr. (Denzel Whitaker). Washington, who directed The Great Debaters from a script by Robert Eisele (The Dale Earnhardt Story), anchors the story with the team's measurable progress, but the film is also about the state of race relations in America at the height of the Great Depression. With lynchings of black men and women a common form of entertainment and black subjugation for many rural whites, the idea of talented and highly intelligent African-American young people learning to think on their feet during debates would seem almost a hopeless endeavor. But that's not the way Tolson sees it, as his students serve themselves and the cause of racial equality in America with energetic arguments in favor of progressive government and non-violence as a viable social movement. There are some startling moments in this movie, particularly the sight of a man found lynched and burned to death, and an extraordinary moment in which we see black sharecroppers and white farmers engaged with Tolson in arguments about unionizing together. Forest Whitaker is outstanding as Farmer's emotionally-reserved father, also a Wiley professor. This is the kind of film where one hopes two great actors such as the elder Whitaker and Washington will have a scene together, and when it comes it's as powerful as one might hope. --Tom Keogh Two-time Academy Award® winner Denzel Washington (American Gangster) directs and stars with Academy Award® winner Forest Whitaker (Last King of Scotland) in this important and deeply inspiring page from the not-so-distant past (Richard Roeper, At the Movies with Ebert and Roeper). Inspired by a true story, Washington shines as a brilliant but politically radical debate team coach who uses the power of words to transform a group of underdog African American college students into an historical powerhouse that took on the Harvard elite. DVD Special Features: Deleted Scenes The Great Debaters: An Historical Perspective. That's What My Baby Likes; Music Video. My Soul Is A Witness; Music Video Theatrical Trailer Sneak Peeks: Grace is Gone, Cassandra's Dream, I'm Not There, Hunting Party |

The Express [Blu-ray] List Price: $19.98 Sale Price: $9.49 Average Rating: ![]() |

Based on the real-life story of college football hero Ernie Davis, The Express will remind some moviegoers of the heart-tugging Brian's Song. Ernie Davis was a star athlete at Syracuse University and the first African American to win the Heisman Trophy. Unlike other winners of that era, he wasn't allowed to attend his banquet dinner because the venue didn't serve blacks. He died of leukemia at the age of 23 in 1963. That element of his story is well known to football fans. What the filmmakers concentrate on in The Express isn't just Davis' athletic prowess, but the relationship he had with his coach Ben Schwartzwalder (Dennis Quaid). Rob Brown (Stop-Loss, Coach Carter) lends both gravity and charm to the role of Davis. He plays Davis as a strong willed and moral young man who refuses to let racism and discrimination dominate his life. He joins a Jewish fraternity, gets along with his predominantly white teammates and shows respect for his family and coach. The film is wise not to present Schwartzwalder as wholly color blind. Though not overtly racist, he makes a few references that would not be acceptable in modern-day society. Overall though, the coach doesn't care what color his players are, as long as they share the common goal of winning. Quaid is well cast in the role, adding just the right amount of gruff mannerisms without becoming a caricature. Brown has the difficult task of adding suspense to a character where most of the audience already knows his fate. Still, he manages to keep moviegoers on their toes--hoping for a miracle that we know will never come. --Jae-Ha Kim The story of first African-American winner of the Heisman. |
