Tuesday, February 14, 2006 is day of St. Valentine. It is traditionally the day when lovers exchange of notes confirming their
love for one others. Modern Valentine symbols are often either in the form of heart or love.
Valentine's Day began life as a Catholic feast day in honor St. Valentine. However, it is not clear exactly who St. Valentine was. According to the Catholic Encyclopedia of 1908, there are at least three possible candidates for the position.
The first was a Christian priest in Rome, how was martyred in the second half of 3rd century. The second was a Bishop of Interamna – the day modern Terni – which, like the priest was martyred and is buried near but not exactly the same place as the first. The third was a martyr in North Africa about which nothing is known.
The associations with romantic Valentine began in the Middle Age, when the concept of romantic love has become widely accepted. This connection is not mentioned in any of the earlier stories and which is regarded by secular historians as purely a matter of legend.
The feast of St. Valentine was said to be on February 14 by Pope Gelasius I in 496. There is a widespread legend that he created the day to fight against the practice held on Lupercalia of young men and women pairing off as lovers by drawing their names in an urn, but this practice is not attested in all the sources of that time.
Valentine's probably reached North America in the 19th century with the arrival of British settlers. Gradually, Valentine's Day has changed Like most other festivals and celebrations, from a pagan to a religious to a secular event.
