Vivaldi and Piazzolla: Eight Seasons Vivaldi and Piazzolla: Eight Seasons
List Price: $16.98

Despite global warming, Vivaldi's The Four Seasons is more popular than ever. But it still seems strange that Gidon Kremer and his Kremerata Baltica ensemble--a group that continues to stun us with riveting performances of lesser-heard works--would tackle the tried-and-true baroque masterpiece. Luckily, Kremer inventively separates each Vivaldi season with a corresponding composition from Astor Piazzolla's Four Seasons Suite, making for fascinating comparisons. Kremer's performances of the Vivaldi are remarkable, sounding solid and fresh. And like an infectious Broadway musical, Piazzolla's seasons always seem on the verge of a giddy dance number. Kremer really gets to show off on these tango-inspired pieces, but he's charming throughout. The programming probably won't make this your reference Four Seasons, but for those who love their Vivaldi in small doses or fans of Kremer's Tango Ballet disc, this is a must-have. --Jason Verlinde

Michel Legrand By Michel Legrand Michel Legrand By Michel Legrand
List Price: $16.98
Sale Price: $10.39
Average Rating:

If the American pop culture profile of French composer-jazz pianist Michel Legrand doesn't seem what it once was, don't be misled: his European indie film scores continue six decades on, now numbering nearly 200. But Legrand's most beloved work remains the lovely, evocative themes he created in the '60s and '70s, including "I Will Wait for You" from The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, The Thomas Crown Affair's "Windmills of Your Mind," the theme from Summer of '42, and his work on Barbra Streisand's Yentl. This collection marks Legrand's first solo piano recordings, presenting those and other film score highlights in spontaneously improvised performances that offer a glimpse of Legrand's musical soul. If, as in "Windmills," his enthusiasm gets the best of him and he occasionally lapses into flights of melodramatic pianistic self-parody, there are more than enough sublime moments here to compensate, especially on lesser-known songs like Best Friends' "How Do You Keep the Music Playing?," "What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life?" from The Happy Ending, and Brian's Song's "Hands of Time." --Jerry McCulley

Shows the life of a Buddhist monk from when he was a child taken in by the temple to his last days as an old man.Genre: Foreign Film - OtherRating: RRelease Date: 8-SEP-2006Media Type: DVD

Working miracles with only a single set and a handful of characters, Korean director Kim Ki-Duk creates a wise little gem of a movie. As the title suggests, the action takes place in five distinct episodes, but sometimes many years separate the seasons. The setting is a floating monastery in a pristine mountain lake, where an elderly monk teaches a boy the lessons of life--although when the boy grows to manhood, he inevitably must learn a few hard lessons for himself. By the time the story reaches its final sections, you realize you have witnessed the arc of existence--not one person's life, but everyone's. It's as enchanting as a Buddhist fable, but it's not precious; Kim (maker of the notorious The Isle) consistently surprises you with a sex scene or an explosion of black comedy; he also vividly acts in the Winter segment, when the lake around the monastery eerily freezes. --Robert Horton

Negima!? Spring and Summer Specials Negima!? Spring and Summer Specials

Studio: Funimation Prod Inc Release Date: 10/14/2008

Two OVAs made in 2006 continue the hijinks of the harem comedy Negima! (2003), based on the manga by Ken Akamatsu, the creator of the popular Love, Hina. Ten-year-old Welsh wizard-in-training Negi Springfield continues teaching at the Mahora Academy--and remains the object of the entire student body's affection. In the Spring adventure, class rep Ayaka and the rest of the girls try to heal a quarrel between Negi and Asuna by taking a trip to a tropical island. Yuecchi messes up a spell in the Summer story, and ties Negi to the shy Nodoka by a red string. The string will stay on all through the day--the day the girls have decided to spend at a luxurious spa. Both episodes deliver plenty of fan service shots of cleavage, panties, and nudity. The sight of overly well-endowed teenaged girls fondling a prepubescent little boy has a decidedly unwholesome tone, but it's exactly what fans of Negima! want and expect. (Rated TV MA: suitable for ages 14 and older: nudity, risqué and toilet humor, cartoon violence, tobacco use) --Charles Solomon
