A Closer Look At The New Mercedes SLS

The Mercedes Benz 300 SL "Gullwing" is one of the sports car the coolest of all time. Named because of its unique doors, hinged roof, the Gullwing was the Enzo of his time tremendously fast, outrageously expensive, and style to an entry. Clark Gable owned one, Andy Warhol painted one, Ava Gardner and crashed one in news. No sports car from Mercedes, not even the Mercedes-McLaren SLR, came close to matching the appeal of iconic Gullwing's. And now, the Mercedes SLS.

The SLR was a bastard child of a supercar that neither McLaren or Mercedes-Benz engineers really felt their own. McLaren, Gordon Murray, designer of the winning championship runners Brabham and McLaren Grand Prix, the driving force behind the McLaren F1 supercar, thought the SLR overweight and overworked, opposition to his personal philosophy of automotive design. For their part, the Mercedes-Benz engineers were worried about a freewheeling McLaren changing rapid cultural development, and skeptical of his methods. The car culture clash that results is incredibly fast and extremely robust, but curiously named and strangely uninvolving to drive.

All this may explain all Mercedes SLS new AMG light weight, high tech, 571 hp super coupe represents the distilled wisdom of some of the best and brightest engineers the best company in the world of automotive manufacturing. And yes, the Gullwing doors separate.

As the SLS, the SLS Mercedes coupe is a front mid-engine, with its 6.3-liter V-8 (actually, it's 6208 cc) placed entirely behind the center of the front axle line. The engine is based on the M156 V-8 from SL63 AMG, but has been modified and primped enough to warrant a new codename House - M159. Mercedes claims over 120 parts and components have been redesigned. The most highly significant changes, however, is a very dry sump system which allows the M159 to crouch low to the frame. The engine delivers 571 hp 6800 rpm and 479 lb-ft at 4750 rpm. Some 402 lb-ft is available from just 2500 rpm.
The engine drives the rear wheels through Mercedes SLS new 7 speed dual clutch transmission, repackaged in a shelter-deck at the rear of the vehicle to help deliver the SLS 48/52 front / rear weight distribution. Engine and transmission are connected by a sandbar a couple of cast-aluminum tube, inside which carbon is a drive shaft of the fiber. The transmission offers four modes - Basic, Sport, Sport + and manual - each with different protocols quarters. The transmission also has a launch control mode that allows full commando starts with wheelspin electronically controlled to prevent engine the deadlock chain.
