Most sequels pale beside the originals. However, this follow-up to Douglas Fairbanks's surprise 1920 hit, The Mark of Zorro, is a welcome exception. Though again mining the Old California Robin Hood idea, it's better produced, it's better scripted, and it features the still-agile 42-year-old Fairbanks in not two, but three roles--playing Don Diego/Zorro as well as his own foppish son, Don Cesar de Vega. The big change here: Don Cesar's weapon of choice is the whip rather than the rapier. You can think of him as a forebear of the bullwhip-cracking Indiana Jones. The setting shifts to Spain, where Don Cesar is falsely accused of murder. Tyranny's head again rears as our hero romances a very young Mary Astor and battles the series's most formidable foe yet, Donald Crisp's Don Sebastian. With a more reasonable budget, Fairbanks was able to stage the fights and cliffhanger escapes that were beyond him the first time around. That's Warner Oland, the best of the Charlie Chans, as Archduke Paul and Jean Hersholt of Greed as Don Fabrique Borusta. --Glenn Lovell |

Douglas Fairbanks, the most famous of the Zorros, made this mix of comedy and derring-do reluctantly, as a change-of-pace from his modern-dress playboy roles. The Old California adventure fared so well at the box office it caused the athletic superstar to rethink his image and don period finery for his best later vehicles, including The Thief of Baghdad. Here, Doug has a ball playing dual roles, as hopeless fop Don Diego and as masked caballero Zorro, sworn enemy of all oppressors. When he isn't dueling with the evil Capt. Ramon (Robert McKim) or rescuing peasants, Don Diego/Zorro courts the lovely Lolita (Marguerite de la Motte) with bad magic tricks and worse manners. In the end, when Lolita's family is jailed, our hero throws off his masquerade, whips out his rapier, and wins the leading lady's hand. Full of fun plot twists, secret passageways, and Fairbanks's signature arms-akimbo bravado, this silent classic (with restored sepia interiors) became the model for all the Errol Flynn-Tyrone Power swashbucklers to come. --Glenn Lovell |

Douglas Fairbanks spared no expense for what may be the most lavish fantasy movie ever made. Inspired by the flying-carpet effects of Fritz Lang's somber but spectacular Der Müde Tod, Fairbanks (ever the canny businessman) bought the American rights, then hid the film away as he created his own show-stopping adventure, an adaptation of A Thousand and One Nights in which the magic-carpet ride was but one of many fantastic marvels. Swaggering through massive marketplace sets and cavernous throne rooms as an incorrigible thief and pickpocket, he scales towering walls (with the help of a magic rope) and leads a merry chase through crowded bazaars in his pursuit of loot--until he falls in love with the beautiful princess and vows to win her heart. This jaunty opening is but mere preamble to the spectacular second act. As three kings scour the globe to retrieve the rarest treasures known to man, the repentant thief embarks on an odyssey through caverns of fire and underwater caves. The marvelous special effects--from the smoke-belching dragon and underwater spider to the flying horse and magic armies arising from the dust--may show their seams but glow with a timeless sense of wonder. William Cameron Menzies's magnificent sets appear to have leapt from the pages of a storybook. As the adventure concludes in a torrent of movie magic that cascades nonstop through the breathless final hour, Fairbanks commands the screen with a hearty laugh and graceful athleticism, the cinema's first action hero triumphant. Kino's restored edition is tinted and features an organ score by Gaylord Carter. --Sean Axmaker This is an awe-inspiring jaunt through exotic arabia as a young sneak thief must face supernatural challenges to win the heart of his beloved princess. Studio: Kino International Release Date: 02/03/2004 Starring: Doulas Fairbanks Run time: 155 minutes Director: Raoul Walsh |
